Although nongovernmental private reserves can be a powerful way for communities to conserve local biodiversity, little guidance has existed on sustainably managing such places. Until now. This month, American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands (IUCN NL) released a manual with nine steps to successfully start and maintain a PPA, titled Sustainable Nature Reserves: Guidelines to create privately protected areas.
