Giovanny Suárez Espín
Ecuador Seabird Bycatch Coordinator
Giovanny holds a degree in biology from the University of Guayaquil – Ecuador. In addition, he studied marine biology at the Peninsula University of Santa Elena-Ecuador and completed a diploma in management and marine wildlife rescue at the Biotropical Institute in the Galapagos Islands. He also has experience in microbiology and animal histopathology. Giovanny currently works as the Coordinator of ABC’s program to reduce accidental bycatch of seabirds, especially the Critically Endangered Waved Albatross, in artisanal fisheries in southwestern Ecuador, a post he has held since 2012.
Giovanny has extensive experience in outreach and education in fishing communities and working directly with fishers in the development and use of new techniques to reduce bycatch. He also held the position of vice president of the Santa Elena Environmental Conservation Foundation dedicated to addressing a wide variety of environmental issues in the region. Giovanny lives in Salinas, Ecuador.
