Cedar Mathers-Winn

Writer/Editor

I’m a long-time bird enthusiast, a writer since I was too young to spell, and a naturalist since before I knew the word. I’ve had the pleasure of following birds around the world to the wilds of Bhutan, Australia, the Dominican Republic, and the mountains, deserts, and forests of North America. I got my master’s degree in ecology from the University of Montana, where I studied communication in winter flocks of chickadees and nuthatches, braving sub-zero temps and finicky audio gear alongside my intrepid field techs. I have also been an archivist for Macaulay Library and recordist of musics avian, human, insect, and anuran, and I teach natural history classes locally in Bozeman, Montana. Outside of work hours, I might be found puzzling over animal sign, writing weird fiction, recording weird music, being climbed by my feral 7-year-old daughter, nature journaling, or simply marveling at birds.
