Garrett Rhyne
Southeastern Motus Coordinator
Garrett is an avian ecologist who is passionate about understanding bird movements and migration, and informing conservation efforts through his research. He received a BS from Virginia Tech (’19) and an MS from Louisiana State University (’23). He has worked in a variety of field jobs from prescribed burning in North Carolina, to banding owls in Idaho, to tracking ant-following birds in the Congo Rainforest. He began studying bird migration during his master’s work on Swainson’s Warbler connectivity and ecology. In his position at ABC, Garrett coordinates the expansion and maintenance of the Motus Wildlife Tracking System across the southeastern US from Virginia to Texas, works closely with partners across agencies, universities, and organizations to provide technical assistance and increase research capacity through Motus, and deploys a wide array of tracking technologies on birds to answer critical questions about species of conservation concern.
