Plastic pollution is a global problem and litters coastlines around the world. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates as many as 1.8 million pieces of plastic are along U.S. coasts — and it’s especially bad in one state: Texas. Trash accumulates here at a rate 10 times greater than in the other Gulf states. Litter, whether it’s swept onto the coast by the ocean’s current or makes its way there via inland waterways, is more than just an eyesore. It’s dangerous to birds and other wildlife and can be hazardous to human health.

Together, SPLASh has hosted dozens of cleanups, removed more than 64,000 pounds of trash from hundreds of acres of coastal and riparian habitat, and engaged more than 16,000 community members!
