John Mittermeier
Director of the Search for Lost Birds Initiative
John Mittermeier has had a lifelong interest in the conservation of rare and poorly-known species of birds. He has conducted ornithological fieldwork in tropical countries around the world including Suriname, the Solomon Islands, Madagascar, Samoa, and Indonesia, among others. Prior to joining ABC, he received a PhD in biodiversity conservation from the University of Oxford, a masters in ornithology from Louisiana State University, and studied the history of the conservation movement in the United States during his bachelor’s degree at Yale University. An avid birder, he has seen more than 5,000 species of birds while birding in 120 countries.
