Justine Hanson
Senior Development Officer
Justine credits the Hooded Mergansers that winter in Boston’s Emerald Necklace parks with inspiring her to pay closer attention to birds and their conservation. She comes to ABC after 25 years working in human rights, economic and social development, social science research and evaluation, and projects focused on improving services for the most disenfranchised. Trained as a sociocultural anthropologist, she has conducted research with small farmers in the Peruvian Andes, investors in Nicaragua, paramilitaries in Northern Ireland, and people experiencing homelessness in the U.S., among others. She completed Mass Audubon Birder’s Certificate Program and volunteered as a nest box monitor at Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum. She holds a B.A. from Wellesley College, M.Phil from Trinity College, Dublin, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, Irvine. Justine is an avid birder and a member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club. She serves on the board of the Brookline Bird Club and leads beginner bird walks in and around Boston.
