Kirtland’s Warbler Program Director & Conservation Team Coordinator

Steve Roels earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2018, studying the recovery of bird communities in tropical forest restorations. He earned his M.A. from the University of Kansas in 2011, studying the ecology of a rare prairie plant. Steve previously served as Conservation Associate for the Kansas Land Trust and Senior Natural Resource Specialist for the City of Louisville, Colorado. As Kirtland’s Warbler Conservation Team Coordinator, Steve will be collaborating with federal and state agencies, non-profit organizations, and community groups to further the recovery of the Kirtland’s Warbler and implement the long-term stewardship plan for the species. Steve’s favorite bird is the Sunbittern, which he was lucky enough to spot on three occasions during field work in Panama. Steve lives in Lowell, MI with his wife, a dog, a horse, a donkey, and a flock of chickens.
