ABC’s work focuses on the birds and habitats located in the continents of North America and South America, and associated islands such as the Galápagos Islands and the Caribbean Islands. We also work in Hawaiʻi, and our work with seabirds connects us to the boundaries of the Western Hemisphere, and beyond.
Geographers generally consider North America to extend from Greenland and the Queen Elizabeth Islands in the North to the Panamanian border with Colombia in the Serranía del Darién in the South. As such, we consider any birds in Mexico or Central America to fall within North America. This differs from many field guides to the birds of North America, which are often geared toward audiences in the United States and Canada, and don’t include Mexico and Central American countries.
Similarly, South America extends from the Colombia-Panama border to the tip of the Tierra del Fuego. The Caribbean Islands refers to the island chain surrounding the Caribbean Sea — the Greater and Lesser Antilles — as well as The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
